MARY DOE BLOG - Journal of the Dead

Daniel comes onboard to develop our Internet Marking Campaign with Paul and myself. A family friend of Francs, he seems very excited and un-phased by taking on the job. He has some great ideas and does not back down to the challenge. I can’t tell you how excited I was by the meeting, I really felt Daniel would be able to implement all our ideas, and together, we could generate an amazing platform of content to saturate the Internet and create the buzz for MARY DOE.

We need to establish a strong media presence to give our project the best chance it has to be picked up by distributors. The web content we discussed is all easily achievable – it just takes time, creativity and planning – which we have plenty of. Start early and build the best platform you can to launch your production. We’re a small independent production, so this is going to be crucial for us to sustain a presence in the market place.

Due to the vibe I received from WETA Digital, I decide not to get caught out, so over the next few months I plan to approach various VFX companies to look at the VFX for MARY DOE.

Casting Agent to go after one of the actresses in the US who we want to play Mary.

Dozens of business and marketing meetings follow in the months to come.

I’ll be up late most nights working on getting the budget down even more – the process is never ending. It’s a great experience doing a budget, I recommend it to anyone – you learn so much about your production and are actually able to make calculated decisions on every part of the process. This information will be invaluable when it comes around to the shoot.

Went and saw the late session of WATCHMEN. Absolutely brilliant – Zack Snyder captured a strong telling of a very complex and in depth graphic novel. Felt very inspired driving home.

We go over the budget once again. This is the first time we start to consider a HD shoot instead of shooting on film. It’s going to reduce the budget by enough to seriously consider the digital option. Refined quotes continue to come in. Updated shooting scenarios discussed.

Tony and Adam in to continue work on the miniatures.

Katherine brings in a group of make-up students to help with the fabrication of more Mutants. Heaps of work gets done.

Spoke to Tom at WETA Digital. Richard passed on the project to him and he really loved the script. However after the conversation, I got the first inkling that WETA Digital might not be available to take on my project. They are swamped with preparation for THE HOBBIT and finishing off AVATAR. I pass on an in depth VFX document to Tom with lots of production art attached, so he can evaluate the project in more detail.

The next batch of foam latex Mutant masks is being run.

Lots of artists in today to help out. Gab in to mould Mutant arms.
